Executive Function

What is executive function? This is a question I answer very frequently in my role as an occupational therapist.

Executive function is often referred to as “the management system of the brain” and involves many cognitive components such as:

  • Time management skills

  • Prioritisation skills

  • Planning skills

  • Working memory

  • Task initiation

  • Attention

  • Perseverance

  • Inhibitory control

Our executive function has a big influence on our everyday lives and independence. Executive function is important at any age but there are times when demands increase, such as beginning secondary school or university, that it can become overwhelming if the executive function “foundations” are not in place.

As an OT, I provide practical strategies and recommendations that is tailored to each individual’s functional needs that enables them to develop these skills and go on to reach their full potential!
