Proprioception

Proprioception is a topic I disucss almost every day in my role as an occupational therapist. Proprioception is the sensory feedback we receive from our muscles and joints. Proprioception makes us aware of our position in space and also where we are in relation to objects and people. If a child has difficulties processing proprioceptive input, they may find it challenging to monitor and plan their movements.

Activities that provide proprioceptive input can be particularly calming and regulating on our nervous system. Some activties that provide proprioceptive input include:

  • Yoga poses

  • Jumping on a trampoline

  • Helping to carry heavy items such as books or their schoolbag

  • Animal walks such as crab walks or bear walks

  • Tug-of-war games

  • Playground equipment such as monkey bars or climbing a ladder to the slide

  • Squeezing and pressing playdough or theraputty

If you would like to further explore your child’s sensory needs, please reach out via email to: info@EalaOT.ie
